Helium Mobile, a service built on a decentralized, community-based network, has reported explosive growth. The company announced it added over 148,000 new subscribers in the third quarter of 2025. 

This surge has pushed its total customer base beyond 1.2 million users, which shows a major shift in consumer appetite for alternatives to traditional telecom giants, according to Helium Mobile.

The core of Helium Mobile’s appeal is its disruptive pricing and unique structure. For a flat rate of twenty dollars per month, users receive unlimited data, calls, and texts. 

The service even provides a free plan that includes 10 gigabytes of high-speed industry averages, and has proven highly attractive, especially for cost-conscious consumers and those in areas with poor coverage from major carriers. 

The company’s growth was further fueled by strategic expansions into Mexico and a promotional bundle with Google’s newest Pixel smartphone sold in Walmart stores.

The DePIN Model: A New Blueprint for Infrastructure

This rapid growth is triggered by a novel concept known as a Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network, or DePIN. This model fundamentally changes how essential services are built and operated. 

Instead of a single company owning all the infrastructure, like cell towers, a DePIN incentivizes everyday people to participate. Individuals and businesses can purchase and operate small wireless devices called hotspots, which provide network coverage to their local area.

In return for providing this coverage, hotspot owners are rewarded with cryptocurrency tokens. This creates a “people-powered” network that is more resilient, cost-effective, and community-oriented than traditional top-down models. 

The Helium Network now consists of over one hundred eight thousand of these active hotspots spread across thousands of cities, forming a robust and expanding wireless grid. 

This architecture allows the network to offload massive amounts of data traffic from conventional carriers, significantly reducing operational costs.

The network’s technological backbone is provided by the Solana blockchain, which efficiently handles the millions of small transactions required for data credits and user rewards. This ensures the system operates smoothly and at a scale necessary for a national telecom service. 

The network has already proven its value beyond simple cost savings; during recent hurricanes, Helium hotspots provided critical connectivity in affected areas when traditional services were disrupted. 

Despite its success, challenges remain. Regulatory approval processes in some international markets are slow, and the value of the crypto rewards offered to hotspot operators can be volatile. 

However, with a user base that continues to swell and a model that promises a more equitable and transparent form of connectivity, Helium Mobile has firmly established itself as a formidable new force. 

Its success is opening the door for a future where community-owned infrastructure could become a standard part of our digital lives. 

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission issued a non-action letter to another DePIN project, DoubleZero, effectively confirming that rewards earned by network participants are not considered securities. This decision reinforced the outcome of Helium’s own lawsuit dismissal from April 2025, substantially strengthening investor confidence in the legal standing of these new business models.

Further expanding its ecosystem, Helium launched a new initiative called Helium Plus. This service allows businesses such as cafes and hotels to monetize their existing Wi-Fi routers. Without needing any new hardware, these establishments can share a portion of their internet bandwidth and earn Helium’s HNT tokens in return. 

The program successfully attracted 5000 businesses in its initial rollout. The practical value of the decentralized network was demonstrated during Hurricane Elena in North Carolina, where Helium hotspots, connected to satellite internet, provided critical communication links for affected communities, offloading 450 gigabytes of data when traditional networks were compromised.
